So, I’m going to take a wild guess and say we have all heard the term “gym buddy” or “workout buddy” before; I am talking about that person (relative, friend, colleague, etc.) that you have chosen to drag you to the gym, or to the park, when you rather binge eat or just chill (happens to me at least once a week lol), and in exchange you do the same for them when they are just not feeling like working out.

In other words, you hold each other accountable so you don’t quit exercising.

Why am I talking about this? Because I believe that having a gym buddy is one of the most important parts of your fitness journey. It can be hard to keep your motivation to workout when you’re riding solo, and sometimes that person can be exactly what you need to push yourself to the next level.

gym buddyWho is my Gym Buddy?

In my case, my husband is my main gym buddy. He is the person I go to workout with; he motivates me when it’s rainy outside and all I want to do is snuggle, and he is the one that celebrates with me when I have had a killer gym session, and I do the same for him. #relationshipgoals, am I right?

However, Mo and I hardly every workout together. Our buddy relationship goes up to the gym door, and once we are there, we don’t see each other until the end of the session. Weird, right? Well, if you watch this video until the end, you’ll understand why LOL.

This takes me to my next point – there are different types of workout buddies, and you can choose which one goes better with your personality or lifestyle.

The Gym Buddy that Gets You There

This is my husband and I. We call ourselves “gym loners” lol. We push each other outside of the exercise session, but we workout much better when we are 100% focused – headphones on – no talking involved. We enjoy lifting heavy things without really interacting and as a daily “me time”-time.

*except if we are trying some new exercise, machine or upping our weight – then, we look out for each other’s forms to make sure we are doing it correctly and not risking an injury.

The Gym Buddy BFF

This person stays with you and both of you perform the same workout routine. Here it is easier to push each other because you’re working on the same exercises, there can be a little (healthy) competition involved, and it’s easier to double check each other’s form so the risk for injury is reduced.

This type of buddy relationship works better for people who lift or perform similar exercises, or have similar capabilities, so they don’t have the hustle of changing the machine weights every other time or the risk of one person passing out because they can’t handle running for an hour.

The Social Media Buddy

This is another buddy relationship that I have built thanks to my Instagram Account, and I would recommend it to everyone. The fitness community online is definitely one for the books! There is not as much negativity as in other social media groups, and people really push and celebrate each other because we know how hard it is to stick to a healthy lifestyle.

Through this community, I have been able to cyber-meet people from all around the world, share stories, and find motivation on pictures and videos of journeys similar to mine.

If you’re sitting on the couch, double or triple-thinking about exercising, or walking around the gym and looking for an exercise to do, take a look at social media #fitlife and I assure you, the motivation will come.

The Fitness Classes

So, this one can be a little bit of a stretch, but fitness classes used to be my gym buddy back when I was starting to exercise, and having a group of people around me doing kickboxing or Zumba was my way to go. It was all about the energy!

If you find a nice class that sounds interesting and will help you burn some calories, well, that’s a Win-Win! All you need to do is sign-up for it and show up. Most of these classes are so energetic that they get your blood pumping from the start.

There are probably more types of workout buddies, but these are the ones that have made a difference in my life, or the lives of people around me, so I thought I’d share.

Please take your pick! And let me know if it worked for you or if you know about other types of gym buddies – I’d love to know!
